A typical meal starts with soup (especially in wintertime), followed by a dish made of vegetables (olive oil or with grounded meat) then mors, a selection of different main courses such as meatballs, minced meat with furma, ox stew, adana kebap – turkish sausages. Another common option is to add salad or cacık (diluted cold yogurt) to any of the dishes above. There is also spicy feta cheese if you ask for it. A typical Turkish breakfast is the most comprehensive meal and the one that includes a variety of tastes, textures and colors.

What is a typical Turkish breakfast?

Breakfast in Turkey is said to be the most important meal of the day — usually. The meal usually consists of a variety of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables prepared in a typical Mediterranean fashion. Like most Turkish meals, breakfast is served family style and can be accompanied by a variety of Turkish pastries, flatbreads and other types of baked goods. Traditionally, Turkish breakfast is eaten very early in the morning — sometimes even before the call to prayer — and before the beginning of a long day for some men and women who go to work on farms or pick olives, prune vines or tend sheep and livestock or other fieldwork necessary for farmers.

1- Turkish Cheese at breakfast

Turks love having fresh, soft cheese for breakfast. Turks describe the softest cheeses as beyaz peynir (literally “white cheese” unless they want to refer to the color), bebek peyniri (literally “baby cheese” but it’s not recommended to serve it to a baby) and çöp ÅŸiÅŸ which literally translates as “trash skewer”, a grilled stringy cheese served by street vendors on kabob sticks. Only in Turkey you can have grilled cheese for breakfast!

2- Turkish tea at breakfast

Turkish tea at breakfast is the most important and indispensable thing that you can imagine when you live in Turkey. Turkish people drink a glass of freshly brewed tea at breakfast, just before they eat something. However, there is not so much love for this tradition among non-Turks. Strange enough we have been drinking tea with our breakfast since 16th century.

3- Egg at Turkish breakfast

Cilbir, or Eggs with Garlic Sauce, is one of the most popular breakfasts in Turkey. I love cilbir for its rich garlic flavor, creamy yoghurt, fresh turmeric and parsley, and spicy pepper flakes. Cilbir is a traditional Turkish dish that can be made on the stove top or in a pot over a low heat – perfect for preparing it at home on early weekend mornings for family breakfasts or brunches.

4- Green and Black Olive

It takes place at breakfast tables in all olives and Marmara. Tables without green and black olives are incomplete or missing. Olives are served plain or with different sauces. Olive healing is a kind of food. Olive is successful in Turkish breakfast as it is effective against stomach ease and urbanization. For a generation that is positive and intelligent, it takes place on the walnut and honey tables. These are two therapeutic old trees that were, still eating olive-filled with honey, sugar, use this form of therapy to prevent stomach ulcers and healing fever.
